Make It : Bird Perch for my new Parrotlet!

Posted by

Today’s TV Tuesday post written by Kristin St. Clair, TV Crafter and new bird mommy...

On a recent weekend I went to visit our pet expert Marc Morrone at his Long Island store, Parrots of the World, for an early birthday present to myself: a Parrotlet, the world's smallest parrot! Marc gave me the grand tour of the store but I was most interested in the bird room. The bird room is unique -- all the birds are out of their cages, free to interact with each other and the customers -- and a great environment for a young bird to develop into a social and comfortable companion. That is exactly what I wanted, and after a lot of research and conversations, Marc made it happen!  I walked out of Parrots of the World with a Green-rumped Parrotlet. I named her Pico and we got on the LIRR together to go home to Manhattan. Happy Day!

My "nursery" was all set up in my bedroom but I didn't have a place for Pico to sit in the kitchen while I make dinner. She needed a little comfortable perch, so I decided to create one. I had purchased a simple wood tray from Muji a while back that I planned to embellish, and I had a leftover piece of a sand-blasted Manzanita branch from another project. Those two items, a countersink drill bit and a single screw were all I needed to complete this simple pet craft! And Pico loves it!

  • What an adorable little bird!!

  • So cute and very creative. Pico reminds me of a peachfaced love bird we had when we were young. Contiki was her name. It was at the time of "Around the World in 80 days"movie.

  • nice name she looks so tiny, will she stay that size?
    enjoy her!!!

  • OMG - Pico is sooooo cute! I'm sure she'll make a wonderful companion.

  • This is rediculously cute!

  • Don't forget to get a bird diaper when your bird gets old enough. I've had my Blue crow conure in one for 5 1/2 years every time I take him out out of the cage, he's in the diaper. This way he can go all over the house and with me withOUT GOING all over the house and on me! Enjoy. That is my next bird!

  • I don't think I've ever wanted a pet bird until right now. That's the cutest little thing I've ever seen!!!

  • OMG So cute!!! LOL! :)

  • Congratulations on this new addition to your family! He's sweet and the perfect colour of green! :)

  • I too have a green rump parrolet. I've had Gus for over 13 years and suspect he was wild caught because he is not banded and the poor darling was terrified of EVERYTHING! It took over a year to be able to hold him. Now, I can do anything with him, he'll sit in my hand for ages while I watch TV. An interesting thing about Gus is that he will NOT poop on me. He does poop on my husband the first chance he gets. Did you know that you shouldn't cook with non-stick pots if your bird is in the room? Apparently the fumes are toxic. I know you will enjoy Pico as much as we have loved our Gus. By the way, Gus looks exactly like Pico. Enjoy her... lucky you and lucky bird!

  • Pico is so sweet ... she looks exactly like the parrotlet I had for many years named Paco. He was the best little bird. I almost lost him outside shortly after I got him (his wings were clipped but apparently not enough) He flew from my shoulder into a tall tree. I was running after him yelling "Paco ... Paco" and, amazingly, he flew down to my feet, where I scooped him up. We never went outside again!

  • Hi Kristin! I suddenly want a pet bird!! Pico is the cutest! Unfortunately I have a kitty who would not be so friendly.

The perch is beautiful, especially with that manzanita branch. It would make a great jewelry stand too.

  • Of course, birds LOVE wooden branches. She will have that whittled down to a stump in no time at all.

  • Pico is adorable! Please post the instructions on how to make the bird cage out of old windows. I can't wait to make it for my bird, Chica!

  • Have you ever went to comment on something, only to completely forget what you wanted to say after you entered your name and e-mail? LOL...

  • heard from a friend that you might be able to give me some info on how to make a birdcage out of old windows
