My dear friend Goli recently got a sewing machine, so I thought it would be an appropriate birthday gift to put together a special sewing box. I found a nice simple box at West Elm, the perfect little inserts and dividers at the Container Store and the goodies for the inside at Michaels and local sewing stores. I sewed a little pincushion, which was so simple to make (just like a mini pillow); as well as a leather cover for the scissors (Martha Stewart Crafts scissors, which are perfect for all kinds of crafts, but the pointy tip is really good for sewing and embroidery !). And, though it doesn't fit in the box, I included our book - Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts. Since I can't see her often enough to help her learn how to use the machine and make projects for her new house, it seemed like the next best thing. Happy Birthday, Goli !!!!

What a great and super thoughtful birthday present! I would feel very lucky to receive such a kit. And the leather sleeve for the scissors is a really clever idea that I'm going to have to appropriate for myself!

That's a wonderful gift! She is going to have so much fun with her new machine. I especially like the little tuft in the middle of your pin cushion.

I have found that the best present for crafters is always supplies! the added thought of the pincushion brings a touch of the handmade too - lovely. I made the sewing kit in a jar for a friend (with the pincushion on the lid) and it's proudly displayed on the craft bench.
