Celebrate : Summer parties!

Posted by

Several months ago, we shot "All Set for Summer" a story that appears in our June issue. This is a sort of unusual one for us because it combines quite a few simple, doable crafts with other strategy ideas for easy summer entertaining, all of it relaxed and fun. I loved working on it in the middle of grayest March here in N.Y. and daydreaming of our three themes: summer picnics (truly my most favorite activity this time of year), tiki parties, and backyard barbecues. Below are a few of my favorite ideas- the rest are in the issue so be sure to take a look...

Above is a table set for a tropical theme party  - I think the best part (if i do say so myself) is the green drinking straws embellished with bits of green crepe paper to look like bamboo, so silly but so fun!

Above is another idea - using rolls of really inexpensive white paper to cover an outdoor table- and making a "placesetting" with rubber stamps. Apparently I can't seem to stop developing paper table runners- (see here and here.) One other nice idea is these reusable picnic mats, with pockets for napkins and silverware - a very easy sewing project. Tanya Graff, our stylist found this cool wooden cutlery at Conran.

As I say there's lots more in the story! For other picnic ideas- have a look at this gallery.

  • I just picked up the June issue of the magazine yesterday. I laid in bed in the evening and read it cover to cover. So many great ideas and recipes for summer. We can't wait to have a party so that I can use some of them.

  • Such amazing ideas! I was looking for suggestions for a tea picnic and will definitely be using rolls of paper. Maybe I will stamp them with quotes from Alice In Wonderland so that when you remove your saucer you can see the words.

  • Beautiful ideas, and I have to give a shout out for the nice photography. :)
