Our dear friend Laura Normandin is having a baby! We made a collective gift for Laura—an embroidered patchwork pillow. Athena cut small squares of linen, we each embroidered one or two, and then Steph assembled them into a pillow. It was great seeing all the different styles and techniques together—a personal gift with a lot of character!
1 We did an alphabet sampler scattered through the pillow. Steph did QRS with little rain droplets.
2 Squares done by Jodi, Morgan, and Athena.
3 Steph very carefully arranged and rearranged the squares until she found the perfect configuration.

6 All sewn and ready for the pillow and backing!
7 Even the back looks pretty!

Laura posted a picture of the completed pillow on her blog.
We gave Laura her pillow at a shower we hosted recently. In the spirit of stereotypical pregnancy cravings, the shower was pickles and ice cream themed. Check out the gallery below for some shots from the party!
1 We added kraft paper "cones" to helium balloon "ice cream scoops."

4 Steph made some cucumber tea sandwiches.
5 I love the way Steph arranged her sandwiches!
6 Marcie made pickle-shaped cookies for homemade ice cream sandwiches- yum!
7 Morgan made a delicious lemon-ginger spritzer.
8 And the guest of honor- Laura!
9 With her lovely husband Ben- the proud parents-to-be.
10 Steph passes out snacks.
11 Notice how Kylie's gift on the lower right is wrapped to look like Neapolitan ice cream- too cute!

13 Kylie couldn't wait for the real ice cream to be served.

How clever! I love these balloon. I also noticed your metal storage bins in the background... I have been looking everywhere for containers for storage like this!.. where did you find them?

They were from Ikea but I don't think that they sell them any longer. I found a similar one for sale on Linens and Things - but I think a bit smaller and no lid.

I am curious. How did you got the balloons to stay on the construction paper. I wont these for my shower
From: Blake Ramsey | 1/5/12 at 3:13 pm
Hi Tori,
We just used a little clear tape. You could also use glue dots I'm sure. Have a great shower!

The ice cream baloons are a great idea! Im doing an ice cream shop theme in my classroom. However, the baloons will deflate, any other suggestions on what I could do to make cones that will stay up? I though of making those tissue paper balls, that look like flowers. But instead of putting a stem on it, make a cone. Will that look okay?
From: Blake Ramsey | 7/25/12 at 9:59 am
That's a great idea! You could also try these pre-made tissue balls-

I like the idea of ice cream balloons....I was thinking of using this for a foundation ice cream social event. Any ideas to use the ice cream balloons if I didn't want to use helium? I can't think of how to use them as table decorations. To keep them standing up.
From: Blake Ramsey | 8/13/12 at 9:17 am
Hi Melinda,
Try attaching the balloons to dowels- this should keep them suspended without helium. Good luck!
