Have you seen the October issue of Living yet? It is filled with tons of great Halloween craft ideas, including a really fun pumpkin carving story that uses the idea of carve-by-colors (similar to paint-by-numbers.)
I know Halloween is over a month away, but as soon as that fall chill is in the air, the holiday is on my mind! Plus, you may want to start collecting your pumpkins soon, so you can enjoy them for a few weeks before turning them into jack-o-lanterns. Here are the behind the scenes shots from our new pumpkin-carving story.
1 This starry pumpkin didn't make it into the story. I like how some stars are carved all the way through, and others not, giving them different light values.
4 What a great idea—using real leaves as templates! This pumpkin isn't just for Halloween—what about an autumnal dinner party?
8 I love the design of this witch. She has the look of a simple woodcut, but with so much character!

I saw the new magazine on the newsstand this weekend and couldn't help but admire these lovely pumpkins! I can't wait to do some carving of my own once South Carolina cools off!

The little jack-o-lanterns that made it onto the cover are so cute! And I love the idea of the stars that the starts are cut to different depths. I think I will definitely try that technique this year. Maybe even with bats?
