Behind the Scenes : Pumpkin Carving
Posted by Blake Ramsey
Have you seen the October issue of Living yet? It is filled with tons of great Halloween craft ideas, including a really fun pumpkin carving story that uses the idea of carve-by-colors (similar to paint-by-numbers.)
I know Halloween is over a month away, but as soon as that fall chill is in the air, the holiday is on my mind! Plus, you may want to start collecting your pumpkins soon, so you can enjoy them for a few weeks before turning them into jack-o-lanterns. Here are the behind the scenes shots from our new pumpkin-carving story.
1 This starry pumpkin didn't make it into the story. I like how some stars are carved all the way through, and others not, giving them different light values.
2 Here is Marcie, carving the owl on a giant white pumpkin.
3 All lit up and ready to shoot.
4 What a great idea—using real leaves as templates! This pumpkin isn't just for Halloween—what about an autumnal dinner party?
5 Morgan is placing ginkgos in a leafy border around this pumpkin.
6 Nick and Morgan, hard at work. Look how tall that pumpkin is! Perfect for a haunted house design.
7 I love these little guys. You may recognize them from the cover.
8 I love the design of this witch. She has the look of a simple woodcut, but with so much character!
9 We store the pumpkins in this large fridge overnight, so they stay fresh for the shoot in the morning.
