Inspiration Board : Valentine Crafternoon

Posted by

A while ago I posted about my good friend Maura Madden and her book, Crafternoon, A Guide to Getting Artsy and Craftsy with Your Friends All Year Long, and her related workshop series called Handmade Crafternoon. You can read more about it here...

Since then, we at Living had been trying to come up with the best way to share Maura's inspiring Crafternoon vision with our readers. I am so happy to be posting now about this Valentine Making Party story from our February issue.

Sometimes a story comes together so naturally that it's truly just a total pleasure to be a part of every step of the way, and that was definitely the case here. Somehow, as we started planning things, one super-cool and talented crafter after another got involved, and everyone contributed something special to the enterprise. You can watch a short video about it here. Maura's Handmade Crafternoon cohost and a rare-books librarian at the New York Public Library, Jessica Pigza (who is the coolest ever), pulled a selection of vintage valentines from the NYPL's collection, which inspired the projects we came up with for the story (which are so sweet and funny and beautiful, I must say!). Then our friend Rebecca Kutys, of Moontree Letterpress, handprinted the designs to make 'blanks' for everyone to work with in whichever way they wanted: embroidery, glitter, collage, calligraphy—this party had it all.

Here is an example of a vintage card we loved.

Here's a how-to for the valentine it inspired...

Next Saturday, February 5, Jessica and Maura will be hosting a Valentine Handmade Crafternoon at the New York Public Library. More details can be found here. The event is free and open to the public and will include a raffle of some of our Craft and Sewing Books and Martha Stewart Crafts supplies to benefit the Crafternoon program at NYPL. If you are in the area, please come join us. If you aren't, have a look at the story in Living, and don't worry, the point is wherever you are, there's opportunity to use your library' resources, hang out with friends, make cool things, learn something, and enjoy all of it.

Next week we'll be giving away several Valentine Crafternoon kits in this blog, so stay tuned!
