Get The TechniqueIn celebration of the 85th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Macy's has put together a fabulous campaign called "Macy's Great American Elf Adventure." From August 9 to August 24, Macy's shoppers were asked to participate in a scavenger hunt of sorts—little white elves were hidden throughout Macy's store all over the country and customers were asked to find them, take them home, decorate them, and ultimately upload a picture of their decorated elf to the Macy's Facebook page.
A panel of Macy's judges chose the top 85 designs submitted and the Macy's Facebook community was asked to vote on their favorite. Macy's will announce on September 14 the elf that received the most votes and that winning elf will be transformed into a balloon that will fly in the 2011 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade—so go vote for your favorite today!!
As a partner of Macy's, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia was asked to decorate a few of these adorable little elves (not to compete, but just to be supportive of the contestants in their creativity!), and we at TV crafts were thrilled to be asked to be one of the decorators. Using a fabulous collection of old Martha Stewarts Crafts stickers and a few new paints and tools from the Martha Stewart Crafts paint line, this is what we came up with:
1 The "Macy's Great American Elf Adventure!"
2 The collection of Martha Stewart Crafts stickers we used to cover our adorable little friend.
3 His hat was made from layered gold leaves stickers and embellished with a few glittery, gold butterflies.
4 We gave him a gold foil sticker jumpsuit complete with glittered leaf sticker lapels and an adhesive gem sticker collar.
5 The star base was sponge-painted gold and embellished with a cute little gold-painted mushroom and a couple of more butterfly stickers.
6 The finishing touch was a funny little bell sticker placed on the back of his collar.
7 We painted the star base with the new Martha Stewart Crafts Metallic Paint using a Martha Stewart Crafts Foam Pouncer brush.
8 The stickers were burnished to the white plastic surface of the elf with this new embossing tool, also from the Martha Stewart Crafts Paints line.
