Most of our holiday meals are served buffet style and since we all bring dishes to share, it's nice to have some labels so guests know what is what.
I grabbed some assorted wooden craft pieces which you can find at any craft store to make some quick chalkboard labels and place cards. Wood scraps work too! Or maybe your kids have some blocks to spare? You can even use wooden plant markers (above right) for cheese labels. (Just make sure to leave enough unpainted area on the sticks so that when you stick it in cheese, the painted area will be about one inch away.) I used our chalkboard paint which comes in four colors--I love the black and grey.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Chalkboards are reminiscent of vintage classrooms, a little bit retro, old-fashioned...a classic. Your application is a sweet twist that adds personality and whim to the holiday table. We're sharing old-fashioned, vintage holiday sentiments, so it's on my mind and in my heart right now: http://www.wordplayhouse.com/2011/11/old-fashioned-holiday.html
A nice (and wonderfully simple) project you've shared here. -heather

I'm wondering how do I care for chalkboards after using the paint. After the wood is painted, I wiped the chalk across the chalkboard. After that I wiped it with a very damped clothe. What do I do after this? How do I care for it? How do I clean the chalkboard in the future? Normally I spray items that are painted with a flat or glossy.

Hi Kelly,
You have performed all the right steps for your chalkboard painted surface. There are no further steps needed for the maintenance of your chalkboard project.
