In the event that you can’t make it to a dear friend or relative’s baby shower, a “shower in a box” is a great way to show your love. Check out Our Finds in the May issue of Martha Stewart Living for some themed showers with ideas for gifts, décor and treats. The themes: jungle/zoo, hometown, and alphabet, work well for showers that you CAN attend too!
I got the idea years ago from Silke from who sent her dear faraway friend a shower-in-a-box. She gathered and wrapped presents and included an inflated mylar balloon before taping the box closed. Can you imagine how magical it was when her friend opened the box and the balloon floated out? (By the way, Silke is full of inspiring "in-a-box" ideas like this and this for her mom, and this for her dad!)
When my brother and his wife were having their first child, all the way on the other side of the country, I knew her idea would be the next best thing to throwing a shower myself. I collected small presents from friends and family and included lots of local treats that they were missing.
Some items in my NYC themed shower box...
Black and white cookies, a family favorite and NYC classic!
I spent a lot of time on my maternity leave writing thank you notes. A set of pre-stamped notes, and the stamp set for future card making, would make a welcome gift for new parents. This New York City stamp set is from Yellow Owl Workshop and comes in other cities and motifs.
A mobile can be used as shower decor, and then later in the baby's room. This Guggenheim Building mobile would look great in a modern nursery.
