hello, i'm stephen and i like to make things. after graduating with my BFA and MFA in sculpture, i started to collaborate with my wife, shauna, by making small gifts for friends. we began making product under the name something's hiding in here and unexpectedly found ourselves running a business of hand made goods.
some years ago, we were invited by the curiosity shoppe in san fransisco, ca to have a solo show in their gallery space. we created a small haberdashery pop-up shop of hand made bow ties inspired by the personal style of our favorite mid-century designers and architects. after the show we continued to get requests for additional collections, so we kept making more. we never imagined that it would turn into something more than a one-time project but we've loved every single second of making them.
i've loved the process of growing forage into a brand - from creating our own patterns, foraging for fabrics, printing our packing and building fixtures. it's a unique way to bring together various processes we love from sewing to letterpress printing, carpentry, and photography. sharing our process has been a great way for shauna and i to connect with other designers, shop owners, and the people who wear our bow ties and neckties.
the independent design and craft community is full of inspiring people. a few guys making things that you should know about are:
nathan of kinfolk
andrew of vs. the brain
walter of peg and awl
logan of one-fourty-three
matt of wood and faulk
to celebrate father's day, we'd love to offer 20% off all bow ties and neckties through june 17th for martha craft blog readers. click over to our shop and use the code MARTHA when checking out.
