Meet : Virginia Johnson

Posted by

I have been a fan of Virginia Johnson's work for many years - her painterly style always feels bright and airy; carefree yet elegant.  I recently visited the flagship store and found out she is also from Canada, which made me beam just a little bit.

WHO:  Virginia Johnson

WHAT:  Illustrator and Textile Designer

WHERE:  Toronto, ON

WHEN:  est. 2001

WHY:  Virginia writes, "I love to paint and use colour and very simply to make different shapes and marks on paper.  I'm very inspired by books and art.  I majored in Art History and have a fondness for Matisse, Gauguin, and Sorolla for their strong compositions and vivid colour palettes.

I also find inspiration in nature and travel.  I was in California this past January and drew many different types of trees and landscapes.  I always find a way to turn the drawings into fabric designs."

HOW:  After attending Parsons School of Design and working under Helmut Lang in New York, Virginia moved back to Toronto to start her own collection.

Virginia's illustrations can also be seen in several books and collaborations - her latest being these J.Crew totes that are perfect for carrying beach essentials this summer.
