Now that Easter is behind us I thought I’d share with you a project that didn’t quite cut the mustard. I started out with good intentions of making a bunny from recycled materials and household items. The template I designed for the bunny’s skeletal structure came along smoothly. After I assembled the pieces together, I secured it with hot-glue. Then I took wads of crumpled newspaper and built out the body using masking tape. At this point it looked great. The scale of the body was perfect. I had made so much with so little. But the truth was it still looked like a mummified rabbit found in an Egyptian tomb. I had to give it fur. I thought cotton balls and jellybeans could work. I thought wrong. The proportions were entirely thwarted by the bulkiness of the cotton and the green candy eyes just made it look pure evil. By the time I was able to re-approach the craft, we had already programmed the rest of our Easter content for 2010. Maybe next year I'll try again. So I put my reject project in our give away pile as a joke and to my surprise it was immediately snagged. Turns out our Beauty Producer Mary Forrest loves it and made a special home for it in her office. She’s thinking of what to name it. Please write in with your suggestions.

The other week I had the rare opportunity of getting out of the office to see the Philadelphia International Flower Show. It was the perfect day trip from New York, just over an hour by train. The highly attended event dates way back to the 1820s. I briskly walked by most of the floral and landscape displays, but on occasion I would find myself stopped dead in my tracks, slack-jawed at what was before me. The scale of cultural themed presentations made me think of Epcot meets the Tournament of Roses Parade. I was most impressed with the prize winning plants and had some good finds in the Market Place. I also had a chance to introduce myself to Kathleen Gagan of Peony's Envy (giggity) who I knew was coming on our show. Her segment aired yesterday. Check it out on our website if you missed it.

I don’t know why they call it spring-cleaning. It seems like the best time to tackle those daunting organization projects is in the dead of winter. These past weekends after the New Year I’ve been slowly attempting to address my storage situation. Basically, my rent for a 5’ X 8’ cubby is equal to what my rent was in college. This dilemma is unique I feel mostly to New Yorkers. My friends who live elsewhere have basements, garages, attics, or maybe even a guest room to keep their extra things. I don’t have that luxury, but I’m determined to purge half of it and incorporate the rest back into my apartment. Getting rid of stuff in NYC isn’t as easy as one might think, because everyone I know is grappling with the same space issues and many donation centers are very specific about what they will and won’t accept. The other weekend I finally bit the bullet and rented a van for the day to create a sort of book-mobile full of old art supplies and fabrics. I then drove door-to-door to all my artist friends in Brooklyn and let them riffle through boxes and bags of the junk I wanted to get rid of. I was 80% successful, with the final 20% being donated or finally thrown out. At least now I have access to the things I want to put up on craigslist or ebay.

At work we are in a similar mindset. A few weeks ago Hosanna’s voiced her frustration of how many bins there were filled with useless items accumulating in our department. This led to a guessing game for the four of us. We each guessed how many bins we thought were on the shelves in our workroom and secretly wrote it down on a folded piece of paper. Kirsten guessed 853 and amazingly it was with-in 13 bins, the total being 866. I guessed 1000 and was second closest. Hosanna has since taken it upon herself to mainstream our tool section, both hand and power tools, screws, nails and hardware. All of this happening while A&E’s Hoarders is being broadcasted on the monitor above. I can't watch it. It makes me feel damaged. Below are just a few pics of the improvements to our department.

I barely remember when we learned that “score” means 20 years in Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. But 20 years has been coming up a lot in my life lately, as in remembering 20 years ago. In 1990 I was living near San Francisco, studying Fashion Design, and working in the mall part-time as a fragrance model. That’s right, one of those guys who spritz you with perfume as you try to scurry out of their aim, saying “White Diamonds for Mother’s Day. Free gift with purchase.” Just the other night I saw Lady Miss Kier at a party, the lead singer of the popular club band Dee-lite, who’s hit “Groove Is In The Heart” ruled the airwaves in the summer 1990. It’s the year our sweet new intern Emily was born, and the same year my father passed away. Not to get all heavy here, it just was a big transition year for me.

So the other day Hosanna showed me a project Martha wants us to develop that involves double-welt pockets. Fortunately I’m a bit of a pack rat and still have all my books and notes from my tailoring class; that I took in 1990… Within my notes were several pages with muslin swatches of different hand-stitching techniques that I had been meaning to display. So I did, replacing off-white silk backing with a burnt-orange linen that matches the thread I used. Please take a look. I think it turned out great as a group, but I’d be hard pressed to tell you the application of each stitch. As far as the double-welt pocket, my notes aren’t as clear. Wish me luck as I decipher the instructions from my textbook and simplify for our viewers.

Deck the halls with boughs of holly and whatever else you can get your hands on; it’s Christmas dagnabit! In all seriousness, it’s been kind of crazy here at TV with all the different kinds of greenery we’ve been using to decorate the set. The garlands in the prep kitchen windows are a mix of noble fir, juniper, and incense cedar. The craft room’s garland is made solely of princess pine. Last Friday I jumped into an herb wreath-making segment with Martha that was scheduled last minute. I hope the basic idea of how to make a wreath out of anything came across. They really are that simple. The scents of the bay laurel, rosemary, and eucalyptus we used reminded me so much of growing up in California. It perfumed the entire studio.

This week Jim McCann from 1-800-FLOWERS made holiday arrangements with Martha. I supplied some more unusual clippings for them to play with, like golden arborvitae, privet berries, and Brazilian peppercorns. Growing up I had a giant Brazilian pepper tree in the front yard that was the foundation for the tree house my brother and I played in. So you can imagine my excitement when I came across it as a cutting in the flower market. I thought it complimented the red and white striped amaryllis really well. I think we all try to do that here: take something from our upbringing and work it into the Martha brand. I suggest taking a second look at that shrub outside your window and bring some clippings inside. I bet it could stand being cut back a bit, and if it’s bare, well then just add some glitter.

We’re in our final stages of Halloween programming here at TV. Our big “Spook-tacular” is live this Friday. I just was asked yesterday to be in that show, so you're getting a double dose of me this week (Wednesday's show will air the octopus costume). The look of the set Friday will be very handmade feeling, and trust me, it is. We’ve been working around the clock making paper look like anything but paper. I hope it will impress and inspire you all at home. After the show airs we’re planning to post some behind the scenes pics too, so be sure to tune-in and log-on October 30th.

So the other week I was able to step out for a bit and teach a Halloween craft project to my cousin Ronnie’s 4th graders again. Just in case you missed my past post about her students, they all attend P.S. 20 here in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. And since it is a New York public school, they don’t have really any budget for art materials. This is Ronnie's last year with these guys before they go off to middle school, so emotions I imagine will run high come spring.

The project this time was decorating masks. Which is similar in theme to the craft I'll be demonstrating on the show Friday, but rest assured, they're completely different. So I brought with me to the school a big bag full of felt scraps, ribbon bits, and miscellaneous pom-poms. We first talked about why people wear masks, what they’re hiding, or who they’re pretending to be. I suggested how they could exaggerate certain facial feature to make them look either scary or funny. Last, I encouraged them to use a narrow range of color and to build up texture with repeated shapes. Then we dove into it for about an hour. By the end no two were alike. I think it went really really well. Take a look.

For the past several years I’ve been lucky enough to attend the annual festival in Nevada known as Burning Man. The event’s origins began with a small group of friends in 1986 on the beach in San Francisco. Now it attracts close to 50,000 people of all ages, from all around the world, who all help create a temporary city for just 1 week in the desert. There’s a ton of information on the web if you’re interested in knowing more about it. The best way to describe it is that it’s like Mad Max meets Vegas. Hence, it’s the perfect place for me get inspiration for Halloween. And at TV, that doesn’t just mean October 31st, it’s the entire month for us, and we love it.

In the evenings at Burning Man it’s important to illuminate yourself, so that you are visible to other “burners” and they won’t crash into you with their bicycles. Most of us do this simply with glow-sticks or little flashy LED pins, but some folks create these elaborate outfits with all kinds of battery operated lighting that are just amazing. So last week when I assisted Alison Lewis, a guest crafter promoting her book Switch Craft, I was so excited to learn how fiber optics work. I won’t spoil what she made on the show we taped, just tune in on Oct. 26 to see it for yourself.

This week I’m sewing with Martha on the show a hysterical octopus/spider costume that will air Oct. 28. The pattern is for kids, roughly 4 years of age. This always proves to be a bit of a challenge getting the fit just right, because obviously we don’t have a bunch of children hanging around the office. Fortunately, my co-workers who are moms, like Lenore Welby, have been gracious enough to bring my projects home in the past, taking photos, and making notes for me. So stay tuned in for great ideas every day. Download the nifty templates on marthastewart.com and let us know what you think.

This summer I had the pleasure of revisiting Paris. I’ll be honest, I’ve had mixed feeling about past trips for whatever reasons, but this time around I was smitten. Maybe this was because of the perfect weather, or perhaps because I was with great friends. On one of these beautiful days my besty Charlie and I went to the famous Pere-Lachaise Cemetery -- the final resting place for such legends as Edith Piaf, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, and Maria Callas. I had been here once before nearly 20 years ago during a semester study abroad, so it was interesting to see how my experience differed from the first time around. Rather than scrambling to check off names of the dead and famous, I found myself obsessing on one type of repeated ornamentation: porcelain flower wreathes. The more faded and aged they had become, the more beautiful they were to me. I suppose I was so drawn to them because I am both a craft and floral designer -- hopefully they will inspire a future project for the show. Anyway, take a look and please share any insight or personal experiences you may have with them.

In my apartment I have one giant wall of shelves dedicated to all the tchotchkes that I’ve accumulated over the years. Most objects have a story behind it, whether it be from a trip abroad, a family hand-me-down, or the occasional project from work. It can be quite overwhelming to look at in it's entirety. To be quite honest, it's in need of much editing, and dusting too. My 1 bedroom apartment is in what was once the gymnasium of P.S. 4, an old grammar school building with 12 foot high ceiling. In fact, once when I pulled up the carpet in my bedroom, I discovered markings of the old basketball court. Friends seem to be fascinated by the endless array of curios, often suggesting I open up a shop of some sort, but for me it’s simply a personal expression of where I’ve been, who I’ve met, and what I’m attracted to.

In mid-May we wrapped things up for Season 4 at TV, and the show went into summer repeats. On the first week of our hiatus my mother planned a visit to NYC when spring was at its best. Since she's an artist we opted to spend most of our time going to galleries and museums, such as MOMA and Dia:Beacon. (The latter I highly recommend.)

Of course, it would have been exhausting to go to museums the entire week. Fortunately, my cousin Ronnie invited us to teach an art project to her students one day. Ronnie teaches at Public School 20, right in the heart of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It's the same neighborhood I've lived in for the past 15 years. At first my mom and I were unsure of what to demonstrate, but if there's one thing I've learned working for Martha, it's that you can pretty much glitter anything. We started off with a brief Q&A. I then explained the project to the students, which was simply brushing glue onto artificial leaves and butterflies, glittering, then mounting them on cardstock. The three of us (Ronnie, my mom, and I) went around helping where needed. I had a chuckle conducting pop-quizzes to dispense the handful of extra butterflies. We all resisted over-directing the students, but rather encouraged them to freely express their ideas. This resulted with an impressive array of different styles.

Ronnie explained to me that because of cut-backs in the public schools, art is only taught a total of two hours every month. That kind of crushed me. I doubt I'd be the same person without making potholders or bean art in grammar school. She asked me if I'd want to come back again in the fall and of course I said ¨yes.¨ I don't know what I have planned yet, but you´ll be sure to hear about it.
